It took such a long time to just come up with a good name, even longer to write full articles and recruit people to write for it (I got one person, my friend Izzy) . Somehow I finished it, and now it can be purchased for $5 at Quimby's book store in Wicker Park, a neighborhood in Chicago. And if you live super far from there- or are just lazy- email me at chloekgraham@gmail.com to order a copy. So- buy it! For now, check out this peek at the issue, an article by me called "Is This It: A Strokes Review." PEEK IT:

"The first thing that got me interested in the Strokes was their inspiration taken from Lou Reed. I love Reed's work, and his dirty glam sound. But where is the band that can describe and catch the mood of modern New York? In Is This It, the Strokes on Reed's job as street reporter.
The title song is reminiscent of "Sunday Morning" by the Velvet Underground. The theme of trying to prove oneself works very well with the circular rhythm of the song, like it will never end. "Modern Age" was my least favorite. The faux bad recording didn't sound ironic or artistic on this one. The song was pounding and thump, but it felt too restrained. It met its climactic point, if only we'd noticed.
As with many a Taylor Swift album, almost all of the songs were about relationships... but from the opposite point of view that Swift comes from. The songs (not the people- I'm not going to make presumptions!) don't seem to care about relationships, or they do care, but the relationships are comfortable and not too worrisome. Not overly celebratory, and at the same time not nauseatingly sexist. And Julian Casablancas is a little cute. Just a little."
Relaxing and relentlessly boring, all at the same time. My summer art classes are over, and I didn't really want to go to Lollapalooza, either. I mean, Paul McCartney was the only person I would have enjoyed seeing, and even then it probably would've been disgustingly crowded (though I am a huge hypocrite in saying that, considering that I'm going to see Iggy Pop at Riot Fest). And I have nothing planned for august! I honestly just want the school year to start, so I can have a schedule again and wear all my cute fall clothes.
Anyway, yesterday I went to Logan Square to record shop and thrift. First I went to Bric a Brac records, which is now my favorite record store. Its a really fun place to be in, with its Pee Wee's Playhouse decorating style and Simpsons video game. I also liked that the selection was smaller than a larger store, like Reckless Records, because it was easier to find stuff. I got "Evol" by Sonic Youth, two Rolling Stones pins, and a Lou Reed pin. After that I went to Family Thrift and bought the Twister shirt, denim skirt, and plaid skirt. The Twister shirt is actually an official Twister shirt, and is much larger when its not tucked in. It could easily double as a dress.

"Evol" and "Bad Moon Rising" are my favorite Sonic Youth albums. I like how creepy and eccentric they sound, especially "Evol." They sound like the soundtracks to a prison escape.
I was really excited to find the RS pins, too. I actually got to see the Stones live in Milwaukee and Indianapolis, which was incredible. Most people my age refuse to listen to anyone over the age of 35, but the Stones are the greatest rock and roll band in the world, in my opinion. And apparently thousands of other people agree, because both venues were packed. Isn't it hilarious that supposedly youthful, energetic musical acts nowadays usually disappear within a year and a half, and yet the Stones just celebrated their 53rd anniversary, and THEIR the old codgers? Makes no sense to me.
Bein' Bored. I love models, but it gets annoying how there poses are usually limited to far gazes and slouchy posture. Vogue has had a lot of awesome editorials with models in fun, lively poses, with actual smiles. If they get all the outfits they want and any rock star boyfriend they desire, they should be smiling!
It actually isn't as bad as it has been, but whatever. I love messiness and organized disorder. Its very...I don't know... "I'm such a busy artist I don't have time to clean"-ish. This is one of my favorite posts so far because it represents a new look for me- I removed all three feet of my hair!!! Finally! I love having it gone, and I look adorable. I also made the dress in these pictures; I made the top part at a sewing class, and finished the skirt with the pattern from the same class, by hand sewing. It took forever, but was really satisfying.
I loved finding this magazine at a thrift store, but then it made me really sad. Kurt's death has never been anything but a sad and tragic event to me, not something romantic or part of a "27 Club" legend. Thankfully most of the tributes were journalistically sound (at least to me) and it was bittersweet reading about his memorial in Washington; the pictures of fans dancing in public fountains was truly beautiful. Thats what a true fan of anything does; they celebrate the object of their fandom's achievments, not the tragedies or addictions.

And here's Courtney. It kind of annoyed me that so much of the interview was about Kurt, but it also felt like thats what Courtney needed to talk about, at that time. The image inside the article of her her dressed as a ballerina is simply gorgeous, in that special ironic, punk rock style Courtney has.
By the way, I am trying to get an idea for a music zine called SUBVERSE off the ground. I'll be writing on it and doing a few other things, but I need submissions from others for some specific articles. I'm also looking for any kind of music related art that can be printed on paper for the zine, especially something for the potential cover and maybe some comics. Here's the proposal I sent out to some friends:

Hey! I have been really tired of loving music a ton but having all of my
ideas clogged up in my head like a nasty kitchen sink pipe. So
obviously I want to make a zine! I recently came up with the idea for a
music zine called SUBVERSE (verse, music, song verses), which I will be
writing in but also want others to write for! I came up with three
columns for it: Really Oughta Know ( a musical recommendation of a
record at least 5 years or older), Lyrical Love (a kind of fan rant
about any musical artist of any genre or time period), and Disc Diss, a
negative review of a band or soloist's record (must be constructive, not
"ew i hate that hat their wearing"-esque). I also really want to
interview bands or publish other's interviews bands, so recommendations
for that would be great! Email submissions to chloekgraham@gmail.com .
I've been wanting overall shorts (is that what there called?!) for the longest time. I think Alexa Chung wears them pretty well. These overalls are actually official Looney Tunes merchandise, which is pretty cute. Mine have Tweety bird on them. I paired the outfit with my new Kurt Cobain shirt from 1997. I really like this one. At first the weird wavy details seemed cheap and dorky, but I realized their actually supposed to be the kinds of trees that you would see in the Pacific Northwest (where my wonderful Kurt is from).
These are some of the outfits I have been wearing. I wore the first one to see Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, last sunday. I know, not a glamorous moment at all, but I felt like it. The pictures really didn't capture how sparkly the tights are, but their very disco-queen. I love them to death. They remind me of something Edie Sedgwick would wear.
Here I am in my favorite flannel shirt and Jean Paul Gaultier Homme pants. When they aren't as baggy as Justin Bieber's pants, they actually look attractive and stylish. When they're not pulled up, they look pretty bad. As if the Bieber reference didn't drive that point home enough.
This is a really cool FFA (Future Farmers of America) jacket my dad gave me. Its actually really warm and has the coolest patch on it. It also makes people think my name is Jean! (the name on the jacket, OBVI)(oh i love sounding like a little obnoxious twit).
I love my new cat eye sunglasses! They make me look like that secretary or whatever character from Pink Flamingoes. I'm a total John Waters poser (haven't seen any of his movie...yes, shame me), but I love that aesthetic. It fits my creepy-clean neighborhood swimmingly. It also kinda makes me look like Tiger Morse from her Andy Warhol movie. YES I AM THIS WEIRD.
I absolutely adore this record; it comes with a photo album, and makes an awesome presentation for a book shelf. It also looks like a really bro-y rock shrine. At least I don't have a Led Zeppelin poster yet.
I used a ''how to draw houses" book for this one, so its pretty much a copy. But it gave me a lot to learn about perspective and shading.
I put the Sex Pistols anti abortion lyrics with a typical
"hot chick" image. Kind of a commentary on oppression
and the desecration of bodies being masked as liberation.
This is all about the commercialization of "rebels" and
rebellion as a look, not an action.
Chloehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00796547954310735294noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4017141985306298575.post-24870898447473827772015-03-01T13:31:00.000-08:002015-03-01T13:34:55.970-08:00Velvet and Hotel Wallpaper; a Simone Rocha Fall 2015 Collection Simone Rocha's designs are always unique, but I love the common thread they all have of this dark, feminine style that's innately modern. Here is my review of her most recent collection:
Look 1 seemed more like a wearable sculpture piece, with two giant stuffed black flowers forming the ''top'', and a matching skirt with the same flowers, but with more abstract shapes. I didn't think it was very practical, simply because this is a fall collection and fall tends not to be the warmest; but I do respect it as an individual piece for special events or whenever the heck someone wants to wear it. It looked beautiful. 2 had the same black velvet as 1. I loved the skirt and how it came together like a puzzle, also reminding me a bit of how the pieces of a skull fit together. The jacket looked too haphazard. Short sleeve, and then a long one? 3 was just too wrinkled. Velvet is my favorite fabric besides wool, but when its wrinkled it looks terrible and old in a bad, worn down way. Until 13 there were some particularly ugly filler pieces, especially the ones with hotel wallpaper prints. What is with those patterns in fashion collections? I come across that all the time in my reviews!
Thankfully 13's lacy bodysuit was a favorite; it had an elegant Baroque/Rococo pattern, all in black lace, with ruffles on the sides. 16's unlikely combination was exciting; a baggy black and white plaid dress, with half of the top cut off with semi sheer white fabric. Seeing strange but stylish combinations is always a plus in a collection. It shows the designer's talents as an innovator. Look 18 was kind of ruined by the oddly placed ruffles on the skirt. After this, there were way too many ''wide armed'' jackets and worn out lace nighties. With 26, we moved away from that trend, but instead got a particularly frightening look; white and sheer with floral ruffles on the sides...and then blonde hair growing out of the side of the skirt and bodice? Blech! Luckily I enjoyed 28's pretty, sheer with a slip white dress, and little matching flowers scattered all over. So delicate and soft. The rest of this collection was more misplaced ruffles and shapes, and some of those ever delightful wallpaper patterns.
I was pretty disappointed with this collection. I was expecting more outfits in Rocha's innovative, modern style; but it seemed to just fall back on old standbys (wide sleeves, wallpaper), and filler. I would take the time to look over it for some of the black velvet looks, though. Isn't that exciting? I'm the age of one my favorite magazines! I spent my birthday walking through the Bucktown neighborhood of Chicago, visiting places like Myopic Books, Reckless Records, and Native Foods. These are some of the gifts from my parents and things I purchased on our outing. The first one is an issue of THE FACE with King Kurt on the cover.
Here is my review of their Fall 2015 collection.
As if a leather skirt didn't already exude toughness, look 1's skirt bottom ended in sharp points, with a shiny leather jacket and blue furry collar. If this look was faux, I would totally wear it. 2's pants looked uncomfortably tight, and too much like leggings, which are literally the most unoriginal things in the world. But the jacket was awesome; pretty much the same as 1's, but with an orange collar. I think that color for a collar works very well for a fall collection. The dress of look 3 was one of my favorites; a black dress with a combo of silk and sparkles, the skirt forming the petals of flowers...or some sort of rays...or something. But it looked delightful; unfortunately I can't describe it properly. Sorry to say, but I hated look 5's pants. Their already tight leather pants, and then they need lace cutouts on the side?! No, no, no. It looked cheap and absurd. 6's skirt with leather triangles and tulle looked half done, or as if the skirt was ruffled up and the model forgot to pull it down.
Look 9's top was great as a lacy, sparkly grunge-like piece, slightly casual with a dash of glitz. The shorts were just plain unrealistic. I'd be afraid to bend over with them! 10 was another one of my favorites; a short black lace dress with a lopsided skirt and lines of daisies on one side. I know it makes no sense, but that's what makes it fantastic; its wholly unique and one of a kind (well, one of how many the designer sends to Bergdorf's or Neiman's). Look 11 was even better. It had the same skirt, but the top was black velvet with big orange flowers. Orange is a superb choice for fall florals. 12 *wipes tear bitterly* was hideous. The dark blue collar was way too big, and how on earth do ostrich feathers go with fur and leather?! Also, so many of the looks have been fall friendly, yet this was so ''evil winter queen.'' Look 15's multiple colors everywhere reminded me of an 80's prom dress, but in a long sleeved shirt. A great party look.
I found another favorite in look 20, with its delightful snow white shimmering color, with red, orange, and brown ostriche feathers trailing the air on the side. 28 and 29's pattern combinations were too un-matching, with the clustered flowers and stripes. 30-32's stripes were fun and sparkly, but they weren't original enough for me. 35 would have been wholly delightful if not for the ostriche feathers. They looked dirty and distracted from the gorgeous soft pink and blue shades. The last two looks of this collection, 36 and 37, also suffered from ''way too much.''
This collection produced some of my all-time favorite fall looks, but it also had some disappointing examples of filler, unoriginality, and combos that were mismatched in very bad ways. Totally worth it for fabulous looks like 10 and 20, but not as fabulous as it could have been with talented designers like Kate and Laura Mulleavy.Chloehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00796547954310735294noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4017141985306298575.post-4593503220113047542015-02-26T07:09:00.001-08:002015-02-26T07:09:13.980-08:00Sludge, Sparkles, and David Bowie; a Zac Posen Fall 2015 Review Look 1 of this collection had a toned down burnt red color, but the ''I'' shape on the bodice made it too sporty. 2 was one of my favorites; again with the red color, but this time it was a suit with a wide, roomy blazer. The sweater underneath the blazer was even better, with strange little clusters of embroidery all over. Look 5 was gorgeously old Hollywood/vintage, with its tight red sweater and hip hugging bright red sequined skirt. Hardly casual, yet barely over the top. Look 7 was a dark red fur bath robe. I mean, c'mon! It looks like nothing else! 8's color and pattern was a delightful bright pink dress with floral brocade, but it was too tight. It looked uncomfortable. Look 12 seemed cheaply made; the blues and sparkles were okay, but the fabric just looked flimsy. Stretched out.
Usually I just mention filler in collections, but 13-15 were especially frustrating, since they were all gray. How does it that work for a fall collection? It doesn't! Maybe for a pre-spring melting snow/sludge season! I loved 16's sweater; light brown with yellow and green seaweed-like shapes all over the body. Wonderful fall colors. Look 17 was a dark brown tulle-like dress with sheer fabric above the chest, and a fitted bodice and fluffy skirt. It fit the model very well, and was a fun fall look, not a somber, ''leaves are dying'' look. 19's skirt was fabulous; long a swishy, black and shiny. But the top was too plain, and the darts were too obvious. 21's prints just weren't original. Last year and this year's collections were rife with shiny brocade looks. And the skirt was way too stiff, and long. It reminded me a bit of David Bowie's outfit when he was on Saturday Night Live for the first time, where they had to carry him around because he was in, like, a statue dress? 20 was just another prom dress with cut outs, and again, we know there are darts there! Why do the stitches need to be so obvious? Luckily I found a favorite in 25. It was a dark red dress with sleeves that formed a kind of cape that connected to the dress (you have to see it to understand); I loved the originality and creativity.
Many of the looks after this were predictable or had unflattering shapes, particularly 29 and 31. Why would I want points sticking out of my hips? A baggy dress? 32, though, was a favorite, with its form fitting blue velvet (!!!!!!!velvet!!!!!!!!) bodice and voluminous skirt. The fit was excellent, and I loved the mix of light and darker colors, and soft and stiff fabric. How come so many of the other looks couldn't look this well fitted? 33, the last look, was too overwhelming. The hot pink/burnt red shade with sparkles was too Christmas-y for fall, and the shape of the skirt was too wide. Like, way, way, way too wide.
This collection had some definite standouts, which made it worth looking at, but the ill-fitting nature of most of the clothes, along, with too much filler, was quite disappointing.Chloehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00796547954310735294noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4017141985306298575.post-31057812904034351132015-02-20T06:33:00.000-08:002015-02-20T06:33:19.878-08:00Crashing Oceans and Sludgy Fur: A Review of Carolina Herrera Fall 2015 I hate having so much to do! Especially since its mostly things I can barely stand, like studying for ACTs (I get to wake up at 6 this saturday for a practice one! Hooray!) or trying to figure out at least one mathematical concept. It keeps me from reading my favorite books and writing on this blog, which are far bigger priorities than government mandated educational ''standards'', at least to me. Learning for the test is keeping me from learning things I actually need, and preparing for the career I actually want. Anyway, here's a review of Carolina Herrera's Fall 2015 collection!
Look one was delightful for being worn by Karlie Kloss, and for its print. Swirling blues, grays, and blacks formed a solid, marble-like look, with a sparkling, shimmering finish. I really loved the slouchy shape of 2's jacket, and the silver and black, but the fur on the lower middle was unseemly. It didn't belong. 4 reminded me too much of a badly patterned 80's power suit. Look 7's sleeveless tulle dress was one of my favorites; it had the same kind of marbling as look 1, but this time it was slim and floor length, with a vibrant blue shade. Very couture. Until 13, a lot of the looks had unflattering boxy shapes, unappealing furs, and weird sleeves. I didn't like 13's top (the fur reminded me of mold), but the skirt had an elegant cut and the rain print was quirky.
After this there was some filler, but 17 was good. Semi sheer in black and orange, with gold leaves that climb up from the side and unto the chest and up over the shoulders. Look 18 had the same pattern, but was a bunchy short dress with way too many layers on top. I really liked 25, despite shying away from less form fitting looks in my previous reviews. It had a chic red, black, and white tweed pattern, with rounded shoulders and was very roomy. Look 26 wasn't my style personally (too much white), but not personally wanting to wear it doesn't take away from its worth. I liked the idea; pure white jumpsuit, with a heart monitor-like red zigzag all down the side. A nice pop. 27 was a favorite; pure white top and skirt, with the top sheathing the skirt, and a very subtle white zigzag. The turtle neck collar was a good bonus too. The bottom of 32 popped out too much. It looked like someone's sewing project when they read the pattern wrong.
I didn't really understand 35. The wavy ocean pattern on the skirt was fine by itself; why do we need black slashes on the bodice? 36 was a white dress with an ''all over the place'' pattern of tiny black dashes, and little black and white dot appendages on the chest and bottom of skirt. Look 41 was very confusing, because it was the color of maybe a prom or bridesmaid dress, yet stylistically a wedding dress. The color and formal style did not go together. I obviously loved the last look, 47, because, um, Karlie Kloss, and the skirt's extra layers really played up the whole haphazard ocean pattern, with stylish overlapping straps at the top.
This collection was pretty complaint free for me, with all of the standouts and a general suitability for fall; but I really did not like the fur looks. I personally don't wear fur, but I don't claim it looks ugly on clothes just because of a personal choice; the fur in this collection was just too gray and sludgy. It made up for this in heaps of glamorous gowns and making us all excited for spring wear. I am a fairy princess! Ick, no. I am an ironically sweet grunge princess (I'll keep telling myself that). Anyway, you may have seen this dress before in my blog, but I hadn't worn it in very long, and I just got these gorgeous sparkly blue flats from TopShop, which are so Courtney Love/Meadham Kirchoff. I used to dress like Kurt Cobain's scruffy twin sister, but I realized I also loved to look as girly as humanly possible, so I went for the rebel prom queen look.
Look 1 was a perfect example; a sheer jacket with floral embroidery, over a white dress with a bright green collar and a wide, shimmery green stripe under the chest. Light, green, wispy. 2's dress, a bundle of yellow and silver fuzzies, was a very formal, though still spring look. The jacket geniously combined amethyst and black, almost like the stone was burning. Look 4's top was too plastic and ''space-y'' for me. I don't know what it could go with. 5 was not a look for the fainthearted; a tightly fitted jumpsuit, with a gleefully disorganized set of colorful circles, lines, and flowers. What kept it from being too obnoxious was that there was enough black to block it out, and the colors weren't too bright, or dark. Look 6 was quite similar, but the more pastel, or soft colors...almost seemed like too much? 7 was a delightful brown skirt and blue blazer combo, with heart shaped buttons.
Look 8 was a very wide, light blue dress with a black chest and abstract flower shapes scattered around. I love how it hugged the body in the great way that Dior usually does, but in a more modern, not classic 50's housekeeper way. 9 was a little similar, but the side cutouts were lame. That has been done more times at Target than I can count. 12 would be a perfect look for a young woman like Elle Fanning; short and simple, with an artistic and youthful twist. The pink stone encrusted collar and green teardrop were my favorite parts. Look 17 could have been a fantastic dress, with its gorgeous baby blue and pink floral pattern, but again, those dumb side cutouts! Its so unoriginal. And, it being only held together by what looks like one tiny button makes it look broken. 22 was a ripoff of Prada's art-by-women inspired collection, with the straps, color patterns, and general length. 24 was an excellent clear raincoat, with subtle brown flower prints. Its perfect for future fashion weeks when you might want to show off your new duds! Look 26 made me wonder- did she over stretch the straps of her overalls? Or, should I say, her sparkly pink Dior overalls?
The color of look 29's jumpsuit reminded me of vanilla ice cream frosting, with its semi sheer base and silvery sparkling stripes. For some reason it was very ''model'' to me. I could see all the models after a long fashion week, going out to party in this. I couldn't understand why anyone would want to wear a crumpling, wrinkled dress like 33. Its not grunge, or scruffy, or ''distressed.'' It looks like someone was ''distressed'' and late for work, and ran out of the house too fast. I found look 35's dark blue sleeveless jumpsuit with shorts and crumpled up, sunflower-like flowers, very appealing. Its a very fun, on the go look. (cliche warning, Chloe, cliche warning!). 36 and 37 were way too droopy, especially for a Dior collection, where things usually are round, curvy, and bouncy. 40's shimmering amethyst/pink color was gorgeous, but I can't help feeling like the sheath dress is a broken record. The tank top of 46 was plain and yellow, but that skirt! Oh my! A tight yellow waist with the skirt popping out into the familiar white and striped pattern from previous looks in this collection. Super cute.
The rest of the looks were pretty, but more or less variations on previous looks. This collection had many looks that went seamlessly into the spring season, while a few were filler pieces and lame variations on other popular looks from the collections of other designers. All in all, a great addition to your spring wardrobe (or for us broke folk, a great inspiration).Chloehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00796547954310735294noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4017141985306298575.post-77734022677057695752015-01-27T19:33:00.000-08:002015-01-27T19:33:01.510-08:00Lazy Shooting Stars and Art Deco Hands; a Schiaparelli Spring 2015 Review Yay! A new set of couture collections!
The first look of this collection wasn't a big deal, and the hat wasn't very unique. It was a Shriner's hat; not a couture hat, not a Schiap hat. You could get it anywhere. And the suit was boring and cream color; the decorations looked like water stains. 3 was a favorite, especially since it included signature Schiaparelli bows, but this time embroidered into a Willem de Kooning-esque cats cradle. The background fabric of shimmering white/cream framed it perfectly. 5's pants were way, WAY too wide and baggy, but the top...FANTASTIC! A semi-sheer dark purple sleeveless blouse made out of star shaped fabric. The best part were the ties at the top that trailed behind the model, like lazy shooting stars. 7 repeated the boxy/baggy pant issue, and the blazer was too short. More of an accessory. 9 was a decent shade of blue, and I usually love butterfly patterns, but the fit of the dress was lackluster. Its a couture collection, for gosh sakes!
12's skirt had been done before, and the blazer was far too fitted, to the point of looking uncomfortable. Look 13 was a chic Woodstock/70's beach look. A blush pink halter with a matching floor length dress. The waist and hips were tight to the body, but the skirt popped out. 14's coat and shorts were beautiful, in their dark black sparkling mystery. The back of the coat also had a cute criss cross pattern. 15 (finally!) was a jumpsuit I liked. Aquamarine blue, with surreal white and red blobs sprinkled about. And for once, it was fitted to the body, and not constrictive at the same time. Unfortunately, 16 reminded me of a cheap 80's prom dress from a vintage store's blowout sale. 17 again used 15's surrealist spirit, this time with a tight mermaid-style pea green dress with a matching head wrap, with a swirling ribbons and art deco hands print. The rest of the prints on dresses were plain, and the last look just didn't work; a burnt gold blazer with a train? Too much!
I liked this collection a lot more than previous Schiaparelli + Marco Zanini collections, but was disappointed with some of the plain filler and ill-fitting pieces. On NYE I went down to the Wicker Park Reckless Records with my gift card, and used my checks from my museum internship for these gor-juice shoes! (I unfortunately was forced by my mom not to purchased taxidermed toads playing a xylophone; I know, I know; my life is horrible)
I almost got the much cheaper version of this Stooges record, but I found out that this one had two vinyl records, one mixed by David Bowie (one of Iggy's best friends) and the other by Iggy, along with a little booklet about the record's history and effect on the Stooge's career. I loved learning in it that Raw Power was what Kurt Cobain called his ''favorite album, ever.''
Oh! MY BELOVED STONES!!!!!!!!! I have been wanting their last album of the 60's for so long, and there is literally not one song on here that I don't whole heartedly love.
I know I'm female and if I wear a Nirvana shirt I'm just a stupid poser who's favorite song is the only one I've ever heard, which is Smells Like Teen Spirit (WHICH WAS INSPIRED BY SOMETHING KATHLEEN HANNA, THE LEADER SINGER OF ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS RIOT GRRL BANDS, SPRAYED ON KURT'S WALL), but Bleach is my favorite album.

Hole satisfies every auditory and aesthetic need of mine; Courtney, in my opinion, is right along with the other 90's ladies of style, like Kate Moss. And, um, every song in this album is incredible. ''Plump'' and ''Doll Parts'' are my faves.
Hello fashion...people...whatever... During break I've been descending even further into my Nirvana/Hole obsession. It also works because I think, no matter what music period I'm into, I've had a mire grunge style; the torn jeans, fuzzy sweater, messy hair.

I made this vest also by myself! Yay! I was inspired by my new love and the punk book I just got. because its hand made. Basically. :P
I have so much love for this book; the vintage pictures of the movement are absolutely gorgeous, despite being almost exclusively in black and white; my favorite modern, inspired looks are the ones by Rodarte and Margiela.
I got this vintage coat today at the Village Discount. I managed to look beyond the horrifying Mount Everest of self help books and find it. The jacket is faded pink leopard print.
I've just been studying a ton lately, and I'm homeschooled, so most of my school assignments are online, which makes any extra use of the computer feel like my eyes are melting out of my head. And lets face it; Shake It Up reruns are totally worth 2 hours of your life.
I spent today with my mom, Christmas shopping and seeing David Bowie Is (my second time, her first). I also got my first Betsey Johnson piece, this hat:
Collage is my new favorite craft; this one is of roadies and musicians from a torn up Creem magazine. Oh, and Snuffalopagus and Twiggy.

I just made this one tonight. Its a collage of all my favorite models, such as Twiggy, Lauren Hutton, and Veruschka. I put a poem in the middle of it:

I am
the girl you know
blazing me through the pages
of fancy free
woosh and swing
clean and fresh
or POP
and happening.
You see me,
never, ever to understand me.
Clothesclothesclothesssssssssss! Bee-oo-tiful clothes! I haven't done a clothing post in such a long time, so I have three outfits to catch up with, and some new designs I sketched up (now i want to be a designer! yay career confusion!). Here's an old dress of my mom's that had lived on various closet shelves for over 20 years because no one realized how easy it was to repair! And, yes, I did the repair!
This is an Emmanuel Ungaro 80's dress, with some fabulous shoulder pads. I think the pads are subtle enough to not look too SUPER CAREER WOMAN POWER SUUUUUUUUUIT!!!
This is a gor-juice flapper dress I purchased at an estate sale. I love how colorful it is, and it has an odd 60's look, since many of the hippies resurrected vintage 20's- 30's looks from thrift shops.
The December issue of Vogue is even better than the last; I loved the articles about costume designers, like Sandy Powell and William Ivey Long; I very seriously recommend reading Long's story in the 2014 Met Gala Vogue Special Issue. And have felt unproductive. I do my school work, talk to friends, do some reading, and listen to music (my latest music adventure has been the Stooges), but I haven't been doing much myself, especially on my blog. I still love fashion. Yesterday I bought the November issue of Vogue; Natalia Vodianova was so beautiful on the cover, in her shining gold Chanel dress. And when I opened the magazine, the first thing I saw was an image of Karlie Kloss, painted pure white with roses on her head and breast. It dazed me, and brought my heart up from the slightly blah place it has been in lately. Dazed is my favorite place to be; something special, significant, poignant, whatever, strikes you, and for a few moments in time, its just you and that something (the Stones, David Bowie, Karlie *yes, first name basis*). But I also feel unsure. Fashion will always be a part of me, but I feel my interests straying occasionally.
Music became a more important part of my life this past summer. I saw a documentary about Ed Sullivan, and seeing the Stones perform such amazing music really changed me. I had finally found a missing piece I only distantly knew was gone. Then, I started reading about them and seeing pictures of them, so then I saw who they hung out with (Bowie, Iggy, Lou) and it was an upward spiral from there.
But I don't think music will ever be a career for me. I can't sing (I lip synced my way all through church choir), and writing about it is too hard. You don't want to worship these people, because 1: they could be a super jerk with a super talent to match, so it would be best to just see their work as work itself, unless you meet them and they give you a flower garland and say some stupid poem that you pretend means something, or 2: no one should be put on a pedestal, and celebrity worship leads to, at the least, acceptance of all their work, good or bad. And I feel like I'm still in the worshipful stage of fandom. In order to be a good music writer, I need to dedicate my life to music (not something I am willing to do) and defend it, which often times means criticizing it (or acting like a stuck up jerk and being the only person not dancing in the arena). How could I possibly break it to Mick that *gasp* ''Dancing in The Street'' was kind of campy? Or did they mean to be that way?
I also started writing poetry, about lost rock stars, myself, and other people I see laying on my neighborhood high school's football field. And I write about dresses and clothes, the way you can get so lost in them, and how that makes them awesome. This essay or whatever it is is starting to sound confusing and convoluted, but I guess that shows how I feel right now. I don't know exactly what I want to do with my life, or even my day. I just know it will be something creative, stylish, and inevitably something ''rock'n'roll'' related. I'll probably be a writer of some sort. Whatever.
Anywaysie daisie, heres a list of things I really recommend, am inspired by, and have been up to:

1.) Lorde's new video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PdILZ_1P74

2.) Basically anything Rolling Stones/Stooges/Led Zeppelin related

3.) And I started knitting this tank top (and yeah, it is kind of weird to end a list at four, but WHATEVER, DUDETTE):
And finally, wonderful, fabulous Natalia. The pictures (especially the cover) were stunning, but it made me angry that her name was at the bottom of the cover, while last month Reese Witherspoon's cover had her name right at the top. Let's face it; models have a special way of wearing clothes and being stylish that no one, NO ONE, can touch. And they deserve that honor.*dramatically leaves podium without bowing* *cymbals*
He was one of my favorite fashion designers, and even when outfits in his collections weren't to my absolute liking, the beautiful ones were so poignant and blew anything sub par out of the water. He is a classic American designer (not from America, but his career was mostly here), and learning about his career and life is essential to even the most basic fashion education.
Look 1 was a favorite; how rarely that happens! It was a cute little short number, in a white, creamy shade with delicate flower buds and black pop art drippy black shapes. 2 reminded me a lot of the dresses from Chanel's recent Texas themed collection. Woven and patterned with little white, black, and patterned leaf shapes. It did have a stiff shape, but the feathers gave it a very light, shell-like look. 4 looked cool all together, but when you don't have the necklace with the giant silver circles, how exciting would the top really be? 5's top was beautiful; it had the same idea as 1's print, but with green buds and white with black outline shapes. Look 6 may have been my most favorite. It combined the drippy shapes from 1 and 5 that I love so much, with the woven dress of 2. The black shapes without flowers made it simply delightful. So modern and just plain elegant.
I didn't really understand the fringed looks, especially 8. Fringe taken out of its hippie or cowboy style looks out of place and cheap. 9 had a very Christopher Kane look, with the circle flowers on the skirt. 12's top was torn, or at least it looked like it. Was she subjected to a bear mauling? 15 was very different from previous looks; the top had shapes related to 1's shapes (maybe their cousins?), but this time they were all scattered together, very Jane Miro looking. The skirt had little lilac flowers falling down the skirt. 17's combination of chaos was way, way too much. I don't think the shapes even fit together. 19 didn't help at all, adding fuzzy texture to 17's soup.
After these looks we just got a bunch of bad rip offs of Keith Haring style squiggles and just wrong prints, like in 23. It looked like badly combined wall paper. 30's short jacket was a breezy combo of dark blue and white; I loved it, and found it very stylish, but it looked a lot more ''winter'' to me (though it didn't look very warm). Most of it was pretty disappointing after this, but 36's pants were metallic, white, blue, and floral. The shine wasn't too shiny, but certainly not understated. Very chic. The last look, 44, was okay; the flowers were pretty, but it just wasn't exciting. Or terribly original.
The first looks of this collection were beautiful, spring, and modern. But this collection was bogged down quite a bit by strange patterns, bad combos, and wrong shapes. Chloehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00796547954310735294noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4017141985306298575.post-57788420450281107972014-10-13T07:55:00.002-07:002014-10-13T07:55:38.039-07:00Stella McCartney Spring 2015 Review Like Simone Rocha, I have always admired Stella McCartney's designs SO MUCH, but have never gotten around to reviewing any on this blog. Well today, I shall start!
I really loved look 5. The way it wrapped around the neck at the top with the belt buckles wasn't too ''tough'' looking, and the dark blue simplified the look. 6 was a little too plain and baggy, and unlike 5, the belt buckles really stuck out, since the dress was pure white. I didn't get the holes in 7 and 9. They just weren't exciting, and the outfits still looked plain. After this there were a few sloppy looks, but 15 was amazing. The denim was so blue that it didn't look too cheap (as very expensive clothes trying to look ''down to earth'' often do), and the four little fuzzy lines and zig zags were cute additions.
Look 21 was gorgeous. Short, dark black, and silky. I have never seen a black outfit this feminine, this girly and fun. 23 had a kind of ''inside a seashell'' look to it, shimmery pink with a little blue on flowing, light fabric. 25, disappointingly, was quite ugly. The hot pink/blue plaid dress looked like a garbage bag, and the jacket was torn up like an over-filled one. Many of these looks were very ''pajama-like'', and distressed in the most unflattering ways. They honestly just looked tattered. 33 was a very airy slip dress, with cut outs that weren't too big. I really loved the combo of black with the holes; they made the dress look even more light.
Look 35's sweater would have been really pretty, with the little blue branch shapes on white, but the illusionistic parrots looked out of place. 39, I'm sure, was my most favorite of this whole collection; all the different prints were put together like a rainbow. 40 had kind of the same idea, but was shorter and the prints were in more darker and cloudy shapes. It was such a wonderful collage.
What I loved about this collection was how perfectly ''spring'' many of the looks were, while still being very different from each other. I didn't like the sloppiness of other looks, and the ''grungy'' or ''distressed'' looks just looked torn up. It needs to be mixed up! Anyway, I really love this new-yet-old skirt suit; it had a light and dark blue hound's tooth pattern. I especially love the bow at the collar; I consider it very Schiaparelli.
This one fortunately had some very elegant, obviously ''spring'' looks, but also some filler and odd looking shaped dresses.

This collection started out with a lot of plain looks; black dresses, white dresses. 6 was ugly. Normal top, and then some wacky blimp shaped skirt? No thanks. I really loved 7, though, with its pure white color, wide skirt, and little black and white roses. Very couture. After this there wasn't much but filler (black jackets, plain white jumpsuits, strange shapes), but 17 was short enough to not cover too much, and the wide sleeves, print, and white color made it look so comfortable. Almost like you could sit down and tuck your legs inside. The jackets of 18 and 19 were too boxy, and just with the shape would look over sized for the wearer. 23 was a pale, pretty shade of blue with a classic beyond classic signature Dior curve in the jacket. I want Elle Fanning to wear this!
The first thing I got excited about with 25 was the embroidered pockets; They look like the same plant and shape, but one side is just hot pink and the other is yellow, blue, and pink. I also loved the shape, the way it hangs off the body but still keeps the curve of the bodice. It also made the whole pinafore/overalls trend bare-able. After this was more filler and plain colors, and 32 had an ugly color combo with metallic blue and black. It reminded me of a cheap t-shirt. Thankfully, 34 was a vibrant, floating sleeveless robe/long vest in shimmering hot pink with white flower embroideries. Spring in the most celebratory way. I also liked 35; it was a cute little pink jacket with a perfect ''Dior curve'' and purple embroidery on the bottom half of the coat. 39 was way too ''sporty'' ; sports gear is fine as an inspiration, but when it gets literal, it also gets really bad.
Look 42 was way, way too long. It looked like a baby wearing her dad's shirt. I can't really explain 46's color, but it was a kind of white metallic, almost silver. Very long, with long wide sleeves. I loved it, but I don't think it fits in spring. It was more Snow Princess. I didn't get 49 and 50 at all. They look just like coats, and are very long, but have no sleeves whatsoever. Why?
I loved this collection's pretty spring looks, and interesting shades. The filler and weird shapes did bog down the fun a bit, though.
